Tauranga Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons

Tauranga Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons was founded in 2004 when Dr John Bridgman joined the well-established practice of Dr David Chrisp. They consult in the McIndoe Clinic at 15 Brown St.

The McIndoe Clinic is a purpose built consultation and day stay surgery facility. Here they undertake such procedures as wisdom tooth removal, dental implant placement and the extraction of teeth under intravenous sedation. Both Dr’s Chrisp and Bridgman hold appointments to consult and operate at Tauranga Public Hospital. Much of the acute presentations of trauma and severe dental infections is undertaken at Tauranga Hospital. Surgery requiring a general anaesthetic such as Temporomandibular jaw joint surgery and Orthognathic surgery is undertaken by Dr Bridgman at Grace Hospital.

Dr Brandon Hitchcock, Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon, also works at the McIndoe Clinic where he undertakes Cosmetic Facial Surgery.

John Bridgman

MBChB, MDS, FRACDS(OMS)

John completed his Dental Degree at Otago University in 1990. Having worked as a dentist at Christchurch Hospital for 2 years after graduation. John joined the staff at Otago University for two years as a lecturer in Oral Surgery. Following this he entered the New Zealand training program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery by completing a Masters Degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a Medical Degree, both from the University of Otago. John has experience working in a number of practices in New Zealand and spent some time at the prestigious East Grinstead Maxillofacial Unit in the UK before returning to Tauranga and OMS in 2004. John holds registration as a Specialist Dental Practitioner and a Specialist Medical Practitioner with the New Zealand Dental Council and Medical Councils respectively. He is a visiting surgeon to Tauranga Public and Grace private hospitals. John is an active member of the New Zealand Dental Association, the Australia and New Zealand Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. He has held several leadership roles within these.

David Chrisp

Following graduation from Otago University in 1978, David spent time working in Australia and in the UK. He obtained Fellowships by examination in Oral Surgery from the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons in 1982 and the Irish Royal College of Surgeons in 2000. David commenced practice in Tauranga in 1984. David has held a consultancy position at Tauranga Hospital since 1986 and operates in the hospital weekly, together with an after-hours on-call commitment. He is an active member of the New Zealand Dental Association amongst many other high profile dentistry organisations. David has been teaching sedation techniques to Dentists annually since 1990 and lectured nationally on his implant practice. David’s practice satisfies the credentialing and registration requirements of the Australasian College of Dental Surgeons and the New Zealand Dental Council.
